ALPINE: New focus on core markets starting to pay off
New ALPINE 2015 program for margin optimization is showing initial results // Increase in EBIT, EBT and revenue from construction services

SALZBURG The Austrian ALPINE Construction Company achieved satisfactory results during the first half of 2012 thanks to its new strategic focus on the core markets Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic in a difficult market environment. Revenue from construction services increased again, i.e. from 4.3% to 1.588 billion euros (2011: 1.522 billion). The earnings before tax (EBT) rose to a positive 0.6 million euros in the first half of 2012.

The first steps in the comprehensive ALPINE 2015 program focusing on “margin before sales” have taken effect. Over 60 % of the revenue from construction services is currently generated in the strong core markets Austria and Germany. The improved result in Western and Central Europe caused by implementing the strategic parameters of the ALPINE 2015 program for the future compensated for the downturn in the southern European markets seriously affected by the economic crisis.

Earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) increased from 6.3 million to 23.1 million euros during the first half of 2012, earnings before tax (EBT) were reversed from a loss in the previous year to a profit of 0.6 million euros.

Sales developed favorably in the business sectors structural engineering and power plant construction (+ 9.7% to EUR 598 million) and in communications and energy (+6.3% to EUR 197 million). A slight downturn (- 0.7% to EUR 728 million) was registered in the civil engineering sector, experienced throughout Europe due to the scarcity of government funds.

The order level of more than 3 billion euros continues to be satisfactory (2011: 3.3 billion euros). The company had an average of 15,245 employees in the first half of 2012, of which approx. 7,000 are employed in Austria.
