On the grounds of the ORF transmitter mast in Linz1 – Freinberg there should be erected a new 127 m high transmitter mast instead of the old 147 m high medium wave transmitter. The existing construction is triple wired on two levels at 120-degree-angle. The new mast shall be constructed in the same way. Main reason of the new erection of the lattice mast is the extension of the DVB-T network in the Upper Austria area.

The transmitter Freinberg is situated in the centre of the local recreation area Freinberg that belongs to the city of Linz. It sits right next to a nature trail, a garden centre, the Kollegium Aloisianum (an elite school in Linz) and several family homes. The antenna tower had to be replaced as the old supporting formwork (a former 147 m medium-wave transmitter) would not have been able to carry the additional weight of antennas needed to provide the wider area of the city of Linz with digital TV as well as antennas of third-party providers. The building authority mandated that the new antenna tower had to look similar to the old tower. This was the reason why the 127 metres high tower (30 m shorter than the old tower) is secured with cables on two levels and in three directions.
