The new Vienna Central Railway Station project is currently the most important infrastructure project for the City of Vienna. On an area of 109 ha, not only is an ultra-modern railway station and major hub for European railways being built, but also a new district. An affiliated BahnhofCity will accommodate shops, restaurants, hotels and offices. In the immediate vicinity a 8 ha park, 5,000 apartments, as well as kindergartens and schools will be created.
In January 2010 work started on the demolition of the Südbahnhof (south railway station). Parallel to this the work on the Central Railway Station has already started and up to 500 workers, as well as 100 items of construction equipment, are engaged on this. The partial commissioning of the station will take place in December 2012. The whole project should be completed in 2015 and will then function as a central hub for 1,000 trains and 145,000 passengers every day.
