The most challenging aspects of this project were the short time to calculate it, the extremely short time to prepare the construction site and obtain required materials (in particular fill material), finding an alternative between “purchased Betonite” or “own mixture” (supported by the technical university in the city of Graz), finding subcontractors for sealing work and managing this unusual construction and environmental project.

After forest clearing and rough planning has been completed (about 60,000 m³ earth moving) detailed and fine planning of landscape and batter with fill material (about 110,000 m³) had to be done. A particular challenge for man and machinery in terms of work safety, quality and costs was the construction of the batter with a slant of 2 – 3 m and a height of 30.00 m and an intermediate berm. Further constructions occurred simultaneously to filling: installation of a mineral sealing layer 2 x 20 cm with a special mixture (Betonite content about 3%), construction of a Betonite mat, PE-HD foil, protective membrane and/or geogrid, pipelines and later on a 50 cm filter layer 16/32 by subcontractors.

The main works were completed on time and turned over free of error despite bad weather during the installation of the mineral sealing layer and laying the PE-HD foil.
