Underground construction is one of the ALPINE Group’s highly specialised areas of activity and business. This essentially concerns the construction of tunnels using conventional or mechanical tunnelling. The services offered by this area are mostly required in connection with the construction of roads and motorways, rapid transit and underground railways or high-speed railway sections.
Strategic development of business operation
Part of this operation is the construction of access galleries, caverns and pits for power station and water supply constructions. The underground construction business area bundles all of the skills within ALPINE. At the beginning of 2009, this division was strengthened with the acquisition of the Innsbruck tunnelling specialist ‚Beton- und Monierbau GmbH‘ (‚BeMo‘). The newly founded ‚ALPINE BeMo Tunnelling GmbH‘ (‚ABT‘) now integrates both, the underground construction division of ALPINE and the newly acquired company, thereby combining the group’s entire expertise on this subject. This increased the capacities on the Austrian and German market and the division’s activities now also reach into Sweden, USA and UK.
Innovation is the key to masterstrokes
As the level of environmental awareness is increasing worldwide, there is an increasing trend to build many utilities underground. ALPINE is an experienced partner for these solutions and has already implemented a multitude of projects in Europe and Asia.
The most noteworthy include the current Gotthard Base Tunnel project, which is the core of the ‘NEAT’ (‘Neue Eisenbahn Alpen Transversale – New Alps Transversal Railway’). With a total length of 57 km, it is currently the longest railway tunnel worldwide and is a brilliant feat of civil engineering. A special solution is being used for laying the track. A track construction train, which was specially designed and obtained for this project, guarantees fast concreting in the underground area with the simultaneous laying of the track. This solution makes up to 108 m of finished slab track possible per day (incl. rail grinding, laying, setting and concreting sleepers).
