Construction period: 10.2010 – 04.2012
Location: A1, Świerklany – Gorzycki
Country: Poland
Continuation of construction of motorway A1, section “Swierklany” – “Gorzyczki”, through ALPINE Bau. The project includes the southern section of the Polish motorway A1. When fully completed, it will be 582 kilometres long and run from Gdansk up to the border of the Czech Republic near Ostrava.
The contract section is 18.33 km long and runs from the future junction at the city of Świerklany to the border between Poland and Czech Republic near the village Gorzycki. The contract also includes the construction of two junctions near the cities of Mszana and Gorzyce, a motorway service area for each direction and a toll-gate.
The motorway will have 2 lanes on each side with a possibility to extend it to 3 lanes each. 32 bridges will be built along the roadway, one of which will be the centrepiece – a 380 m long cable-stayed bridge across the valley of the Kolejówka stream.
It will be a challenge to complete this further construction within the short construction period even though a large part of earthwork has been completed already. One of the main difficulties of this contract is the fact that about a third of the roadway runs through an actively mined mining area. A requirement is that the ground is not allowed to settle. Extensive and large-scale use of geotextile and geogrids is employed for this purpose. Embankment fills are additionally strengthened with reinforced soil. The embankment is secured in many areas with large-scale steel grids, erosion-protection grids and bore piles in the segregation berm.
Two purpose-built asphalt mixing plants will be needed to provide the volume of asphalt required.
