Lauter Valley Bridge
During the course of widening the A6 autobahn to 6 lanes between the Kaiserslautern-West junction and the Kaiserslautern motorway intersection, the present Lauter Valley Bridge will be completely dismantled and replaced with a new bridge. The existing bridge will be completely deconstructed down to the foundation structures, which will be left in the ground. Two separate structural sections will be built, one for each carriageway. These two 5-span composite steel sections bridge the Lauterbach valley with a length of 275 metres. At its highest point, the bridge passes approximately 25 metres over the valley floor.

ALPINE builds bridge for German „Autobahn“

The ALPINE Construction Company and a Polish partner constructed three stadiums for the European Football Championships. Posen Stadium, seating 43,000, was completed in the fall of 2010; the PGE Arena in Danzig, holding 44,000 spectators, hosted its first games in August 2011, and Warsaw National Stadium with a capacity of 58,000, was officially opened yesterday. ALPINE demonstrated its exceptional international competence in the construction of sports facilities once more in preparing for the large-scale UEFA Euro 2012^TM event.

The spectacular Baku Crystal Hall is being built on National Flag Square and will be a new landmark in Baku’s port. The hall constructed by ALPINE will allow 16,000 spectators to watch the 2012 Song Contest live on each of three days. Another 100 million viewers around the world are expected to watch the event on television to see which performers from among the 43 participating nations win the contest.

ALPINE started building the multipurpose hall last August. ALPINE Bau Deutschland AG, a subsidiary of the Austrian ALPINE Construction Company, is the main contractor responsible for planning and building the Baku Crystal Hall. The hall will have a capacity of up to 25,000 spectators. Currently 500 members of staff are working on Baku’s most famous construction site to ensure the project’s timely completion.

New Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel meets the latest safety requirements
The new, single-track Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel is located on the railway line between Koblenz and Perl in Rhineland-Palatinate. The new tunnel meets the latest safety standards. The new tunnel tube will be connected to the old tunnel tube by eight 15-meter accessible cross passages. The project has a contract value of about 80 million euros. A total of 67,000 cubic meters of concrete were used to line the tunnel walls with reinforced concrete tubbing, for the tunnel floor and for the construction of the two tunnel portals and eight cross drifts. The 360,000 cubic meters of excavated material was removed by rail in an environmentally friendly way. The first trains are scheduled to run through the new tunnel at the end of 2012. Afterwards the old Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel will be rehabilitated.

ALPINE has built gigantic pumping stations for the water transfer project since 1997
ALPINE already provided services for the Chinese “Yellow River Diversion Project” at the end of the 1990s. The water from the Yellow River must be pumped 364 meters over the river’s water level before it can flow a distance of 167 kilometers to the dry regions of the Chinese Shanxi Province. ALPINE built two pumping stations for this purpose between 1997 and 2001 having a length of 165 meters, a width of 18 meters and a height of 39 meters.

For the ALPINE group Poland is a very interesting and attractive market. Apart from the large-scale projects such as the construction of stadiums and the ongoing infrastructure projects, with this contract ALPINE will enlarge its presence in Poland and can even underline its high competence. 

The Hotel
The five-star-hotel will have a floor space of 16.756m2, with 225 rooms on eight floors. Restaurants, conference rooms, swimming pool, fitness and wellness area as an underground garage are planed. The design comes from the architect JEMS ARCHITEKCI Sp.z.o.o. The ground plan represents a rectangle where the entrance and conference area will be situated. 

ALPINE competence in hotel construction
ALPINE has a great competence in hotel construction especially via the ALPINE Bau Deutschland AG, a subsidiary of the ALPINE group. They built or have under construction among others like the Empire Riverside in Hamburg, the deluxe Hotel Villa Kennedy in Frankfurt or the five star hotel in the „Zoofenster Berlin“. In Vienna/Austria there have been finished a hotel construction in the area of „Viertel Zwei“.

Road construction project
The rehabilitation project in Bulgaria is comprehensive: in addition to reinforcing the existing pavement, the project will include the installation of new road drainage and the rehabilitation of 20 bridges. The project also includes the reconstruction of power lines, the installation of data cables, mounting traffic signs and the highway marking. 

On course for success in Bulgaria
ALPINE Bau GmbH opened a branch in Bulgaria in 2004. ALPINE is currently building the Tsankov Kamak Hydraulic Power Plant in southern Bulgaria for approx. 300 million euros. The Salzburg-based construction company is also successful in the field of environmental technology in Bulgaria, currently building three turnkey sewage treatment plants in Sevlievo, Popovo and Burgas Meden Rudnik. In 2008 ALPINE was honored for its infrastructure construction projects in Bulgaria. ALPINE’s Bulgarian branch received an award in the infrastructure category in a competition sponsored by the Bulgarian “Pari” newspaper.

Gaining the contract for the construction of the “Baku Crystal Hall” underscores ALPINE’s skills in the construction of stadiums and events venues and demonstrates the trust that Azerbaijan’s State Committee on Property Issues has in the ALPINE construction group. Building operations on the site at National Flag Square have already begun. The arena will hold around 25,000 spectators.

Concerning the construction of modern sports venues, ALPINE has extensive experience which the company with operations worldwide has proved on a number of occasions. These include three football stadiums for EURO 2012^TM in Poland, the Allianz Arena in Munich, the extension or reconstruction of three stadiums for EURO 2008 in Austria or the International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.

ALPINE to build sport and concert complex in Baku, Azerbaijan

The net result for the period was not yet able to follow this positive development and amounts to EUR -3.1 million (EUR 0 in 2010). The margin pressure continues to be high and the efficiency programs introduced in 2010 have not unfolded their full potential yet. The free liquidity, however, stands at EUR 457 million, an impressive increase of approx. 35 % (EUR 337 million in 2010). At EUR 3.3 billion the volume of orders remains at a very comfortable level. The number of employees has remained stable at approx. 15,100.  

Forecast
Thanks to its geographical diversification and wide range of services, the ALPINE Construction Company is well-positioned. Together with ALPINE Energie, the company has a promising mainstay in the growing renewable energy sector and network and communication technology. The ALPINE Construction Company expects a stable result with a slight increase in construction output for the year 2011.

For Franz Hiesl (Upper Austria’s Vice Governor) and Dr. Gerhard Kurzmann (the Styrian State Transport Minister) the completion of the Bosruck Tunnel is a further application of consistent road construction policies. The second tube also serves to improve tunnel safety. 

Despite the difficult geological conditions, an optimized course of action allowed the planned construction period to be reduced by 2.5 months. “The construction of the western tube presented a special challenge to the tunnel engineers. Difficult geological conditions exacerbated the tunnel drive. The close collaboration between the client and contractor was instrumental to the success of this tunnel construction project,” said Roman Esterbauer, responsible managing director at ALPINE Bau GmbH, and Franz Pacher, managing director at ALPINE Bemo Tunnelling, the joint venture partners. 

The Bosruck Tunnel, presently a bottleneck on the A9 Pyhrn Motorway, one of the major transit routes to southeastern Europe, will be expanded with the construction of the second western tube with a total length of 5.5 km. The contract was awarded by ASFINAG as part of its tunnel safety program. Upon completion and commissioning in 2013 this stretch of highway will meet the two-lane safety standard required by the EU and will be a significant step towards the complete expansion of the A9 Pyhrn Motorway. The tunnel will be constructed by excavator and blast drive. 

Construction began in January 2010. The net contract value is 130 million euros. The twin-tube tunnel will be in full operation in 2015 after rehabilitation of the existing tube. Construction of the second Bosruck Tunnel tube will provide a two-lane connection between the states of Styria and Upper Austria. The 5.5-kilometer roadway (including galleries) will have a width of approx. 7.5 meters, and will be located to the west of the existing eastern tube. The tunnel will have 5 emergency bays and 11 cross-drifts, of which 6 will be walk-through, to ensure that it meets the strictest safety requirements.

Its extensive competence in tunnel construction not only allows ALPINE and its fully-owned subsidiary, ALPINE BeMo Tunnelling GmbH, to successfully conclude projects for the construction of railroad and highway tunnels as well as water and energy management systems in Austria but around the globe.

On an international scale, ALPINE is involved, e.g. in the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland, the new subway network in New Dehli/India and the intake tunnel for India’s Tapovan Power Plant. Further tunnel construction projects for power plants are located in Bulgaria and Turkey. ALPINE is currently expanding the subway network in Singapore and, upon completion of the Yellow River Diversion Project, is building an underground water supply tunnel in China. The PGE ARENA Gdansk:  brilliant amber
Danzig is known for its amber, the “Gold of the Baltic Sea“ and its harbors. The stadium designed by RKW Rhode Kellermann Wawrowsky Architektur + Städtebau combines the symbolic value of both elements.

The green seats in the stadium reflect Danzig’s bond with the Polish football club,  Lechia Gdansk. The stadium is built in 34-hectares of ground, is 236 meters long, 203 meters wide and has 40 exclusive VIP lounges spread across over 2,000 m^². The complex also has a number of restaurants, bars and shops as well as parking space for 95 buses and 2,170 cars. Venue security is addressed by video cameras inside and outside of the stadium, electronic ticket access and autonomous power supply system. The arena’s multifunctional design makes it ideal for all kinds of events. 

Other ALPINE stadiums
ALPINE handed over the enlarged and modernized stadium in Posen/Poland in the fall of 2010. The stadium in Krakow/Poland, MKS Cracovia, has already been completed and handed over. It recently won Poland’s  “2010 Building of the Year” award in the sports facility category. Warsaw’s National Stadium is also being built by ALPINE.

ALPINE successful in Poland
The work in progress underlines ALPINE’s position on the Polish market.  The projects include public infrastructure projects and private investments of national significance such as the construction of the University of Danzig’s Department of Chemistry.  ALPINE currently employs over 3000 members of staff in Poland and has become an important local employer.

The roof elements are reminiscent of the harbor cranes in the nearby shipyard. The outer structure is supported by 82 arched steel girders. Due to the sizeable weight of 66 tons each, they present a real engineering challenge.

Since 1989, the Polish Association of Construction Engineers in cooperation with the Ministry of Construction and the Building Supervisory Authority has been organising the award of the popular prize. The renowned competition is very prestigious in the Polish construction industry. In 2009 already, the ALPINE construction site for the renovation of the historically significant Hala Ludowa hall – the “Hall of the Century” in Breslau – received the title “Construction Site of the Year 2009”.

The stadium
At the site of the original sports facility, which had been built in 1912, a modern, functional stadium with a capacity of around 15,000 spectators was built. In the new arena, not only the premier league team MKS Cracovia is playing. On the western stand, the stadium has a stage for major events, which can be disassembled. In June 2009, the starting signal for the work for renewal of the old stadium was given. ALPINE completed the project in close cooperation with the Polish partner KPBP Budus S.A. on schedule within a construction period of only 15 months.

ALPINE successful in Poland
Beside the stadium MKS Cracovia, ALPINE also received the order for the construction of three stadiums for the European Football Championship EURO 2012^TM. Further current projects underpin the presence of ALPINE on the Polish market. These include public as well as private investments of national significance, as for example the new construction of the Department of Chemistry of Gdansk University. The ALPINE Group currently has more than 3000 employees in Poland, and thus is an important local employer.

Six teams competed in the team competition for the best young formwork builders from Vienna, Lower Austria and Upper Austria. The ALPINE Bau team and its apprentices, Sebastian Berger and Andreas Wolfthaler, Upper Austria Branch, Steyr Office, fought for victory and won first place. 

Both the quality of the workpieces and performance in the theoretical examinations demonstrated the apprentices’ professional skills and the high training standards in Austria. Apprentices in their final year before entering a career as “Bricklayers” and “Formwork Builders” from the states of Vienna, Burgenland, Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Salzburg attended the annual competition. 

The competition was streamed live via the Internet to draw more attention to the event. Viewers were able to watch the contestants as they worked. Striking and especially gratifying: the enthusiasm shown by the young bricklayers and young formwork builders as they tackled their tasks underlines the attractiveness of these future careers. 

The state guild master, DI Dr. Rainer Pawlick, and Mag. Michael Pichler (Professional Association for the Construction Industry) carried out the victory ceremony before a professional audience. Bmst. Isabella Leeb and Christoph Peschek, member of the State Parliament, attended as political representatives.

ALPINE encourages apprentices
At ALPINE an apprenticeship is a foundation for life. The Austrian construction company trains approx. 200 apprentices each year. Great importance is attached to an outstanding interaction between parents, apprentices, the school and the instructors. Apprentices passing the apprenticeship examinations with a grade of “outstanding” win a one-hundred-euro bonus.

The construction project will be executed by ALPINE, VAMED and the Lower Austrian Hypo-Leasing company under a full service general contractor agreement. Whereas Hypo Leasing will be in charge of the leasing financing only, the other services will be divided up between VAMED and ALPINE as a performance joint venture. “This contract will let ALPINE demonstrate its competitive position. We were very successful in meeting the challenge posed by taking the building’s historic core into account,“ said a pleased Karl Gruber, Managing Director of ALPINE Bau GmbH. It was also important to create a high added value for the region. Nearly 50 local companies will profit from the construction measures.
The design engineering was provided by the joint venture between the Moser and Arch. Maurer Architects. The groundbreaking ceremony kicked off the start of construction. The rehabilitation work and new building are expected to be completed in 2017.

The “Weinviertel” State Clinical Center
The historic core of the Weinviertel State Clinical Center will be rehabilitated in the course of the project. A new building with a useful area of 13,000 m2 will feature a parent/children center, internal wards and a multipurpose room, providing a state-of-the-art medical facility. “The fact that we will provide the rehabilitation and construction work without disrupting hospital operations will be a special challenge. Special steps will have to be taken in order to keep hospital operations running smoothly,“ declared DI Arch. Anton Mayr, ALPINE’s Project Manager.

For ALPINE the second successful bond placement not only demonstrates the confidence investors placed in the traditional Austrian company by investors but also the importance of the capital market for corporate financing.

The proceeds from the issue will be used to further the company’s continued organic growth and to secure its long-term financing structure.

The pipeline
The GAZELLE pipeline is a new transport line for Russian gas designed to ensure the reliability of gas supplies to the European Union. The GAZELLE pipeline will be part of the so-called “northern transport route” carrying natural gas from the previously untapped source in the province of Tyumen Oblast to Europe. This contract will expand the North Stream and OPAL pipelines conveying gas from Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany and then on to the Czech border.

Arad – Nadlac motorway section
Lot 2 of the Arad Nadlac motorway section is located in western Romania and starts north of Pecica. The two-lane motorway to be built by APINE will have a length of 16.6 km and is one of three sections with a total length of 220 kilometers. The other sections from Orastie to Sibiu (approx. 88 km) and from Lugoj to Deva (approx. 99 km) will be built at the same time. The project includes several bridges and overpasses as well as two parking lots and a highway maintenance depot. 

On the road to success in Romania
ALPINE has already completed a number of successful projects in Romania over the past few years. The construction of three landfills in the Romanian county of Suceava for 22 million euros, the construction of Petrom City, the new headquarters of the Romanian oil company, Petrom S.A., the largest gas and oil producer in southeast Europe, and the Centura beltway in Bucharest are some of its prestigious projects. ALPINE currently employs a staff of approx. 400 in Romania.

Despite the initial situation, the ALPINE construction group was able to hold its own in 2010 with a construction output of 3.2 billion euros, barely 5 % under the previous year figure. A strategic adjustment of activities in business segments and markets due to the general economic development was responsible for the slight decline. The result of ordinary business operations increased by 5 % to 23.7 million euros (2009: 22.6 million euros) despite the slight decline in construction output. The net profit also improved by 5 % to 17.2 million euros (2009: 16.4 million euros). This made it possible to stabilize profit & loss performance as planned. The number of staff members remained stable at 15,100. With 3,3 billion euros, the order bag log reached a high level at the end of 2010, a good initial position for 2011.

“The wide range of offers and our outstanding geographic presence proved to be conducive to the respectable results during a very difficult year,” said Dietmar Aluta-Oltyan, President of the Supervisory Board and co-owner of the construction company. This development was especially favorable at ALPINE Germany, improving its construction output by 5 % (2010: 695 million euros). This also corresponds to an increase from 20 to 22 % in the share of the consolidated construction output. Incoming orders rose significantly by 50 % to approx. 840 million euros.

ALPINE Energie, one of the group’s companies focusing on future technologies, was able to further enhance its leading position in renewable energy and telecommunications. Its 27 % increase in construction output (2010: 381 million euros) made a considerable contribution to the Group’s operating result. The order bag log reflects a 44 % increase.

Development in the foreign markets varied considerably. Whereas the construction situation in Poland developed very favorably, the Balkan States were unable to recover. Positive results are, however, expected in these countries in the next few years.

Corporate action
One of the highlights during the 2010 business year was the first emission of an ALPINE corporate bond in the amount of 100 million euros in June. The extremely successful subscription of the five-year retail bond reflects the high level of trust held by the investors and is another major building block in a financing structure based on guaranteed liquidity. At 252 million euros the net debt continues to stay at a pleasantly low level.

ALPINE wins in the National Projects category

ALPINE Vienna “Steg-Ast” project won the 2011 SOLID Bautech Prize in the National Projects category.

“This project was especially challenging due to the difficulty in using a certain white cement,“ explained Karl Gruber, Member of the Management at ALPINE GmbH, elated with the achievement together with his team.

The 38-meter footbridge in Astgasse was commissioned by the City Council’s Department 29. It connects Vienna’s 13^th and 14^th district across the Vienna River, providing a safe crossing for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The award is further proof of ALPINE’s creativity in construction.

The festivities for the handing over ceremony were especially attractive for the children. The caterer, Niki Neunteufel, and physician, Dr. Andreas Löschnak, also sponsors of the Children’s Villages, brought two TV personalities along, Andreas Wojta and Alexander Fankhauser, better known as cooks Andi&Alex, to cook with the children. Christine Tschürtz-Kny, the director of the Licht ins Dunkel telethon, was also present and delighted to see the children enjoying themselves.

“We at ALPINE see social commitment as an integral part of our corporate philosophy. That is why we usually support projects over a longer period of time to provide help where it is needed,” Aluta-Oltyan said during his visit. “It is especially important to give children with traumatic experiences the best possible care but this is very cost-intensive. Living on the Lake

The subsidized housing units will range in size between 110 and 125 square meters and will come complete with cellars and garages. Terraces and yards add to the attractive ambiance. The Upper Austrian branch

Implementation
The project is being developed by architect Piotr Rudol / Biprowumet Architects, Krakow based on a concept by architect Jerzy Boruta. Architect Boruta will also supervise the construction on behalf of the Jagiellonian University.

The building
Krakow’s Jagiellonian University is Poland’s second largest university and has approx. 40,000 registered students. The building will be located on the “Campus of the 600th Anniversary of the Jagiellonian University Revival” with completion scheduled in 2014. The building will be built on an area of 5,183 m² and have a cubage of over 50,000 m³.

ALPINE strong in Poland
ALPINE is currently building the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland for the EURO 2012, boasting 55,000 spectator seats, as well as the PGE Arena in Danzig for approx. 44,000 spectators. ALPINE won the contract to build the University of Danzig’s Department of Chemistry in July 2010 and recently landed the contract for the construction of a recreation, swimming and spa complex.
The stadiums in Posen and Krakow were already completed in the fall of 2010.

The St. Gotthard Tunnel
The St. Gotthard Tunnel is the heart of the Alp Transit project on the Gotthard axis. It consists of two single-track tubes with a length of 57 km each. The contract to build the longest tunnel in the world was awarded to AlpTransit Gotthard AG, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Swiss Federal Railway, in 2001. The tunnel is divided into five sections. Consorzio TAT, in which ALPINE Bau GmbH holds a 25 % share, is building the Bodio (15 km) and Faido (14 km) sections having a contract value of SFR 1.48 billion.

The stadium will be completed by mid- 2012 and will cost a total of 26 million euros. It will be adapted to the needs of the disabled and family friendly. The arena will have a round wooden roof structure, designed to accommodate, for example, a family stand with children’s club, VIP boxes and business club for 800 people. The choice of location takes advantage of infrastructural synergies, such as the use of the existing parking spaces and a new access road.

According to Karl Gruber, member of the Management Board at ALPINE Bau GmbH, the advantages of taking leave for the further education program are obvious: “The program provides a valuable education and enhances the employee’s qualifications. The program is structured as a system of intensive staggered courses. The employees return to their jobs at the end of the program and qualify to be upgraded.“ The seminars taken by ALPINE’s seven foremen during their further education leave are very diversified and included labor law, EDP for foremen, quality management for core processes, etc. The further education program that started in Upper Austria on January 10 will end on March 31, 2011.

The project
The construction site has an area of more than 2,300 square meters; the complex itself will measure approx. 29,000 m2. It will have a sports pool with six lanes (meeting the FINA Regulations), a learners’ pool and a wading/children’s pool. Future visitors will also find a Finnish sauna, a steam room, a brine grotto, hydromassage tubs as well as a fitness studio and climbing wall.

Airport Metro Express
The Airport Metro Express line in New Delhi is 23 kilometers long and has six stations, connecting the central station in New Delhi with the Indira Gandhi International Airport and the district of Dwarka. The commissioned line between the central train station and airport will provide a fast, comfortable connection to the airport while easing traffic congestion on the roads.

ALPINE’s competence in tunnel construction
Its extensive competence in tunnel construction is the key to ALPINE’s success in the construction of railroad, subway and road tunnels around the globe. ALPINE is currently involved in the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland, part of the new Metro network in Singapore and a water supply tunnel in China, the 25-km Pinglou Tunnel. In addition, ALPINE’s subsidiary, BeMo Tunnelling, recently landed a contract to build two underground railroad stations in London under a consortium – currently the largest railroad project in England.

The Norwegian government is the client for the 108-million-kroner (EUR 14 million) bridge, represented by the Highway Administration – Statens Vegvesen – in the municipality of Alta. The region has pleasant temperatures thanks to the North Atlantic Stream. 

ALPINE intends to introduce itself as a reliable partner with this project and secure a good starting position for further interesting projects in Norway. “We see a great deal of potential in this market and are convinced that a long-term commitment in this area will have a very positive effect,” adds Esterbauer. 

The bridge
The bridge, a 300-meter, asymmetric, cable-stayed concrete bridge, will carry national road traffic. The pylon has an impressive height of 80 meters. Construction will start at the end of April 2011 and should be completed by the end of 2012. 

Expansion into Northern Europe
Political stability and favorable economic growth were the positive factors influencing ALPINE’s decision to intensify its efforts for expansion into Northern Europe. Technologically challenging projects are already being carried out in Sweden by ALPINE’s subsidiary, ALPINE BeMo Tunnelling.  The company recently completed a railroad tunnel in southern Sweden as well as a sewer tunnel near Goteborg with a contract value of approx. 30 million euros. The company also landed a contract for the construction of two underground train stations in London, currently England’s largest railroad project, as part of a consortium.

About 30,000 cubic meters of concrete, 2,800 tons of reinforcement and 2,000 tons of structural steel will be installed. Construction is scheduled to commence shortly, with project completion planned in the 3rd quarter of 2013.

The Borouge 3 Mega project will increase the petrochemical plant’s total production capacity by 2.5 million tons to 4.5 million tons of polyolefins by 2014. Borouge is a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), one of the world’s largest oil companies, and the Austrian Borealis company, one of the leading suppliers of premium synthetics.

The Borouge 3 project is the second project being implemented by ALPINE for the ADNOC Group. The turnkey ADNOC office building to be built in Ruwais is to be commissioned by mid-2011. ALPINE won the ADNOC Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Award in the safety category in 2010 for this project. The award recognizes above-average industrial safety standards on construction sites.

ALPINE lands 111-million-dollar contract in Abu Dhabi (PDF)

The contract will be implemented with financial aid from the operative “Environment 2007 – 2013″ program co-financed by the European Union through the European Fund for Regional Development. Valued at EUR 3.3 million, the contract was signed by the Mayor of the city of Popovo, Dr. Lyudmil Veselinov, and the Manager of ALPINE Bau’s Environmental Engineering Division, Herbert Titze. ALPINE already built a turnkey sewage treatment plant for a PE of 50,000 and 9.5 km of collectors to the complete satisfaction of the Bulgarian Ministry of the Environment & Water. 

ALPINE – experienced in environmental engineering
In addition to the energy sector, environmental engineering is one of ALPINE’s rapidly growing business fields. Its service portfolio includes the construction and operation of landfills, the construction of waste incineration plants, recycling facilities and flood control structures, the disposal and cleaning of contaminated soil and the construction of sewage treatment plants. The wide range of activities is reflected in ALPINE’s construction of a waste incineration plant in Zistersdorf (Austria), an oil sludge disposal system in Schönkirchen and the construction of a gas turbine for OMV.

The contract also includes access shaft, diagonal shafts for the escalators, tunnel for ventilation and electro-technical installations as well as a network of connecting tunnels to existing public transport buildings. 

Josef Arnold, spokesman for the management of ALPINE BeMo Tunnelling, said that constructing with minimum disruption to traffic in the neighbouring tubes of London will be the most demanding aspect of the works. The project’s location in the inner city will require an innovative logistics plan.

“We are proud to demonstrate our expertise in tunnel construction on  Europe’s largest infrastructure project,” says Roman Esterbauer, Member of the ALPINE Bau GmbH management.

Upon completion of the entire line, Crossrail will increase London’s railway capacity by 10 % while providing new destinations and significantly shorter travel times.

ALPINE and its wholly-owned subsidiary, ALPINE BeMo Tunnelling GmbH, has demonstrated a high level of competence in tunnel construction projects in Austria and throughout the world. These include the Pfänder and Bosruck Tunnels, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) between UK and France and the construction of Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 (T5) 

ALPINE has successfly implemented projects for the construction of railways, metros, motorway tunnels as well as water and energy management systems. 

ALPINE is currently involved in the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland, the new Metro network in New Delhi, India and an intake tunnel for the power plant in Tapovan, India. Further power plant tunnels currently in progress are located in Bulgaria and Turkey. ALPINE is expanding the Metro network in Singapore and constructing a water supply tunnel in China. Poland’s head of government, Donald Tusk, attended this event. He personally inspected the progress at this ALPINE construction site. He was very certain when he afterwards assured: “There is no doubt that we will complete this project on time”. 

The roof’s cable construction
The stadium’s entire roof cable construction rests on a “needle” which is its central supporting element. This “needle” has a length of 70 metres and a dead weight of some 90 tons. 72 cables attached to this “needle” were used to gradually lift the wiring. These cables have a total length of 70 km and a weight of more than 2,100 tons. The bottom of the “needle” hangs some 30 metres above the playing field. More than 200 persons were involved in successfully completing this “Big Lift”. 

The stadium
The Warsaw National Stadium provides about 55,000 seats and will be completed in summer 2011. On September 6, 2011, the new arena will be officially opened with a friendly match between Poland and the German national soccer team. 

ALPINE – Experience in stadium construction
ALPINE provides the highest possible competence in the handling of national and international stadium and large-scale projects. In 2009, ALPINE won contracts for the construction of stadiums in Gdansk and Warsaw as well as for the extension of the stadium in Poznan for EURO 2012™. The bridge
The Danube bridge in Traismauer will be built as a prestressed concrete bridge at a height of 15 m. Its total length of one kilometer will be distributed over two approach bridges (north: 460 m and south: 330 m) and a river bridge (360 m). A structure for two lanes and a service lane will be provided in each direction of traffic. The bridge will be supported by two river piers. The center span is designed for navigation on the Danube

Technical challenge – highest commendation
“This construction project is certainly one of ALPINE’s most interesting bridge structures. All the work had to be carried out from a ship while facing a continuous problem with the high tides. The concrete piers were prefabricated on the banks of the Danube and floated into position, making it possible to maintain ship traffic on the Danube without major impediments,” explains Dr. Peter Preindl, managing director of ALPINE GmbH, elated over the achievement together with his team. Peter Preindl and his team also won the 2009 SOLID Bautech prize in the “national projects” category with this project.

Shorter connection between St. Pölten and Vienna
The new Danube bridge connects the S33 in the south and the S5 in the north, providing a continuous expressway from St. Pölten to Vienna north of the Danube. Construction of the bridge in Traismauer reduces the route while abating traffic on the B19 Tulln federal highway. The connection up to the S1 West and A5 Northern Highway South also significantly shortens the commute towards Prague and Brno. 

Know-how in bridge construction
ALPINE is not only involved in bridge construction in Austria but also beyond its borders. Helmut Niederhauser and his team constructed the “Domovinski Most” bridge across the Save in Zagreb and the Beska Bridge in Serbia. The construction company was also instrumental in the rehabilitation of the Kennedy Bridge in Bonn, construction of the first cable-stayed bridge in Saxony and in projects at many other national and international locations.

The jury is composed of nine trainers as well as marketing and human resources managers from large companies.

AlpTransit Gotthard AG, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Swiss Federal Railway, awarded the contract to build the St. Gotthard Tunnel – the world’s longest tunnel – in 2001. The tunnel is divided into five sections. Consorzio TAT, in which ALPINE Bau GmbH holds a 25 % share, won the Bodio (15 km) and Faido (14 km) sections having a contract value of SFR 1.48 billion. The St. Gotthard Tunnel is the heart of the Alp Transit project on the Gotthard axis. It consists of two single-track tubes with a length of 57 km each. The tunnel is to be commissioned in 2017 and will significantly improve transport and travel efficiency.

The final centimeters before breakthrough were celebrated in Switzerland today with a huge event attended by Moritz Leuenberger (Swiss Transport Minister) as well as Dietmar Aluta-Oltyan (Chairman of the Supervisory Board, ALPINE Bau), Roman Esterbauer (member of the management, ALPINE Bau GmbH) and Dr. Franz Pacher (Managing Director, Alpine Bau GmbH Switzerland). In addition to the guests of honor, who were permitted inside the tunnel, the historic event was broadcast on big screens set up in the Lucerne Culture and Congress Center.

“Being there on this historic day was also an exciting event for us. The excellent performance of our teams here on site working under the consortium is impressive proof of our competence in tunnel construction,” said a pleased Dietmar Aluta-Oltyan. “The breakthrough was extremely precise with horizontal and vertical deviation very slight,” reported Roman Esterbauer, responsible for tunnel and railroad construction divisions as ALPINE’s managing director.

Railway engineering
In addition to the construction of the St. Gotthard Base Tunnel ALPINE also landed the contract to install the railway engineering equipment in the two single-track tunnel tubes and on the connecting lines north and south of the tunnel over a length of eleven kilometers until they join the existing railway network in April 2008, working under the Transtec Gotthard consortium. Contract value: SFR 1.68 billion.

“We are proud of this impressive demonstration of our competitiveness and now plan to proceed with completion without delay,“ says Roman Esterbauer, member of the ALPINE Management. ALPINE has been able to participate in the new call for tender since because of major technical and legal modifications ALPINE now considers the realisation of the project to be feasible. The dispute last year resulted from ALPINE’s claims regarding construction delays occasioned by a non-constructible bridge, a fact that, however, was not accepted by the principal. The legal dispute resulting from the termination of the contract by the end of the year, however, will not affect the the continuation of the project.  

The stretch of the A1 highway in Silesia to be completed has a total length of approx. 18.3 km including 32 bridges covering the segment between the Swierklany junction and the border crossing point with the Czech Republic and is to be completed within 18 months. 

A1
The A1 will link Gdansk in the North of Poland with the Czech border in the South and will end near the Czech city of Ostrava. The stretch of 582 km is situated along European Route 75 and is part of Pan-European Tansport Corridor VI. At present construction is under way on the stretches between Grudziadz and Torun as well as  between Katowice airport and Swierklany. The section between Gdansk and Nowe Marzy has already been opened to traffic. 

ALPINE in Poland
In Poland ALPINE currently has more than 3000 employees and as such is an important employer.  The award of the contract for the construction of the chemistry faculty at Gdansk University in June 2010 is particularly prestigious. In the summer of 2010 ALPINE was commissioned to construct High Speed Road S5 with a total investment volume of  245 million euro.  The road project stretches between Poznan and Wroclaw also including bypasses for the towns of „Bojanowo“ and „Rawicz“. Between 1997 and 2001 ALPINE already constructed Polish Highway A4 with a total length of 56 km. In addition to its successful road construction activities in Poland the Group is also providing impressive proof of its competence in stadion construction by building three stadions for the European Soccer Championship 2012. In the field of historic reconstruction ALPINE won the „Construction Site of the Year 2009“ Award for its sanitation of the historically important Hala Ludowa Hall – „Centennial Hall“ in Wroclaw in the Restoration Category.

The multipurpose hall
The 15,300m² multipurpose hall has the size of a European Championship football stadium but is fully covered. “We attached particular importance to environmental compatibility.  Maximum use of the hall is obtained through the outer trusses, allowing the hall’s building volume to be reduced.  The optimal design makes it possible to reduce the energy consumption by up to 45,000 euros (corresponding to 75,000 liters of petroleum per year)” adds Rettenwander. Since the multipurpose hall will be built on the same site where 6 old halls will be torn down, sustainability is ensured by using the old site. Construction on the extremely difficult terrain will involve driving 3 km of piles for the deep foundation, moving 30,000 m³ of soil and installing 25,000 m³ of concrete. A total of 600 people from various branches of business will be responsible for the hall’s construction. 

Salzburg Exhibition Center
With over 591,000 visitors and approx. 37 public/trade fairs per year, the Salzburg Exhibition Center is a special attraction and Austria’s leading venue for trade fairs. The multipurpose hall will offer a further incentive for exhibitors and visitors.

Reconstruction of the Posen Stadium only took 21 months. The U-shaped stands were completely covered and closed to increase the spectator seating capacity to nearly 41,000.

The project posed a great logistical challenge to the ALPINE team since the stadium was still being used for first league matches by KKS Lech and regularly visited by 20,000 fans throughout the construction stage.

ALPINE Bau Deutschland AG handed over the newly adapted stadium near the city center on schedule and in close collaboration with its Polish partners, PBG SA, Hydrobudowa Polska SA and AK-BUD Kurant Sp.J. Football matches at group stage will be held at the stadium during the 2012 European Football Championship.

In addition to the city stadium in Posen, ALPINE is also building the National Stadium in Warsaw seating approx. 55,000 and the PGE Arena in Danzig seating approx. 44,000 for the EURO 2012. In Poland ALPINE is also modernizing the MKS Cracovia Stadium in Krakow to seat 15,000 spectators. ALPINE currently employs a staff of 3,000 in Poland.

An ambitious project
The newly opened sections 512, 513 and 514 will lead the transit traffic between the Brno D1 Motorway and the Pilsen D5 Motorway away from the Prague metropolitan area whilst connecting the two motorways towards Germany. “The completed and commissioned sections were built using state-of-the-art technology. The stretch of road includes two tunnels with lengths of 1.7 and 1.9 kilometers as well as a 2-kilometer bridge, the longest to be built in the Czech Republic thus far. Traffic is controlled by a state-of-the-art traffic control system. A traffic volume of up to 91,000 vehicles per day is expected,” adds Peter Russegger, ALPINE Construction’s Managing Director in the Czech Republic. ALPINE helped to build section 513 from Vestec to Lahovice, completed after four years of construction.

Short access routes
The plant’s central location in close proximity to the A7 and A1 motorways makes it possible to supply the city of Linz and the central Mühlviertel district without having to cover long distances. “This plant will make us even more competitive and boost sales in the Road Construction Division, having continuously risen over the last ten years,” adds Prok. Peter Schwaighofer, Division Manager for Road and Sewer Construction in Upper Austria.

Step by step asphalt production – the plant’s mode of operation
Gravel deliveries are stored in tower silos with a total capacity of over 7,000 tons, conveyed to the drying drums on discharge conveyors, dried at approx. 200° C and transported to the screening machine on a bucket conveyor.

After screening, the gravel drops into 12 different rock containers, depending on the grain size. The gravel is added to the mixer according to the required composition, bitumen is injected and mixed with the gravel. The product is mixed for approx. 40 seconds for three tons and is loaded onto trucks as a finished product through loading silos. The mix loaded onto the trucks is covered with a tarp or brought directly to the site on “thermo trucks.”

Any accumulating dust and bitumen vapors are fully disposed of via exhaust fans, filters and reburning. The “white cloud” visible on cooler days is merely steam and environmentally compatible. The plant is completely enclosed to reduce sound emission. To preserve gravel resources, recycled asphalt, i.e. asphalt dug out from paved areas and crushed, is also used in the production of base course.

Energy is supplied by environmentally-friendly natural gas.
The plant can produce up to 240 tons of asphalt per hour.

Asphalts consist of a mixture of mineral aggregate and petroleum bitumen as the binder, usually containing 93-96 % of the aggregate and 4-7 % of the binder. High-grade asphalts containing plasticized bitumen and hard rock can be produced in this plant for the major road system.

The expressway project stretches from Posen to Breslau and will include a bypass around the towns of Bojanowa and Rawicza. A total of 11 consortia placed their bids for the project, ALPINE emerging as the best bidder. The GDDKiA (federal highway administration in Warsaw) is the client. The gross contract value is PLN 948.23 million (Polish zlotys), currently corresponding to EUR 245 million.

“Winning this challenging highway contract impressively underlines ALPINE’s competitiveness and competence,” says Dr. Peter Preindl, CEO of ALPINE Bau GmbH, pleased with the award. The 29-km section of expressway will be widened to four lanes. A 9-km district road will also be built perpendicular to the project. For the time beeing more than 3000 people are working for ALPINE in Poland.

Success in Poland
In addition to executing traffic infrastructure projects, the company demonstrated it competence in stadium construction, where ALPINE has three stadiums for the 2012 Football Championships under construction. The contract to built the Danzig University´s Department of Chemistry is an other prestigious contract of this year. With the finalization of the rehabilitating of the “Hala Ludowa Hall” in Breslau, the company won the award for the “Construction Site of the Year 2009” in the category of rehabilitation.

ALPINE lands contract for S5 expressway in Poland

The steel design of the Danzig stadium, built under the lead management of ALPINE Bau Deutschland AG, consists of 82 roof elements. The elements weigh approx. 66 tons each and have been installed one by one since the beginning of last May. They are still being held by gigantic supports, to be removed when all of the roof elements are installed and connected to the ring. The stadium’s steel roof will be self-supporting and will ultimately weigh nearly 7.2 thousand tons.

Not only the prominent guests were able to inspect the new stadium during the festivities last weekend. Nearly 12,000 visitors took advantage of the opportunity to check out the progress of construction at “their Danzig Football Arena” during the “open house” hosted by the clients.

Work related to the infrastructure around the stadium, including the construction of the parking lots, is also progressing well.

The Gdańsk Arena
Construction of the Danzig stadium started on December 15, 2008; the cornerstone was laid on July 15, 2009. Construction is scheduled for completion by January 21, 2011. The entire project will cost 156 million euros. The stadium will be able to seat 44,000 spectators. The first match is to be played in the summer of 2011.

ALPINE garnered particular praise in a letter from Michael Berg, the son of Max Paul Eduard Berg, the Hall of the Century architect in Breslau, emphasizing: “I’m pleased that the hall was not only renovated as a monument but – with the modern technology installed – can be used as a multipurpose hall.”

The Hala Ludowa Hall
Once called the Centennial Hall, the hall was renamed Hala Ludowa (”People’s Hall) after World War II. The hall hosted the World Congress of Intellectuals for Peace in August 1948. With 6,000 seats and standing room for 20,000, the hall is an impressive pioneering work of 20th century architecture. The building paved the way for the use of reinforced concrete in the construction of large public buildings. The building’s innovative design is responsible for the feeling of lightness and harmony emanating from the enormous dome. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. The cupola has a diameter of 65 meters and a height of 42 meters.

The Hall’s reconstruction, ranging from the insulation of the roof to the rehabilitation of the concrete and windows, makes it the first seminal reinforced concrete building to shine in new splendor. Today it is used as a venue for movies, congresses and other events such as rock concerts, sports, theater and operas.

This membership in the management board of DVB allows ALPINE to contribute even more to research and development in the areas of concrete and engineering. Apprentice campaign
Training apprentices has a long tradition at ALPINE. Great importance is attached to a sound vocational training and a familiar atmosphere. Attractive training and further education programs can lay the cornerstone for an interesting career in an innovative, international company. Many members of staff pursued their careers through an apprenticeship.
This construction company boosted its apprentice campaign this year and is taking on up to 100 apprentices. Apprentices passing the apprenticeship examination with a grade of “outstanding” win a € 1,000 bonus. The project:
The infrastructure, dating back to the 1980s, has been successively rehabilitated. A public call for tenders was launched for the last section, streetcar line 3 including tracks, etc. and won by ALPINE Hungária Kft. The contract was recently signed by the Mayor of Szeged, György Botka, and ALPINE Hungária’s representatives, Sándor Bartha and András Héli. According to András Heli, “This project consists of providing nearly 3,100 meters of track and contact wires, public sewers, upgrading electric cables and telephone cables as well as renovating the public lighting system. The investment volume for ALPINE will be approx. 7 million euros.” The project should be completed by the fall of this year.

ALPINE Hungaria therefore landed its second traffic project in Hungary within a short period of time. The company recently won the EUR 2.6 million contract for one of Hungary’s most modern bus stations in Hatvan.

About Szeged:

ALPINE Holding issues corporate bond

The project
The project consists of six connected segments of different heights. The building will contain lecture halls as well as a warehouse and technology sectors. Pedestrian and bicycle paths as well as green spaces will also be provided. The new building will have a total area of 28,180 m², the parking lot will accommodate 166 cars. Various laboratories are planned for practical training as well as auditoriums for lectures on chemical and environmental engineering.

The project
The new rest stop including the gas station and shop will be built on the motorway side coming from Germany towards Austria. There will also be a gas station on the eastern side – from Austria to Germany – with an underpass leading to the rest stop. The plans were drawn up by Lenz Architects from Vorarlberg, underlining the regional aspect by designing an impressive wood structure. ” Winning this contract is impressive proof of ALPINE’s competence and competitiveness,” says Wolfgang Eichinger, Manager of ALPINE’s Tyrol/Vorarlberg branch, pleased with the new contract.

ALPINE is currently building the second Pfänder Tunnel tube in Vorarlberg, to be completed in 2012. ASFINAG also awarded this 123-million-euro contract to ALPINE in 2007 as the best and lowest bidder. “Having the management for both sites in close proximity will allow us to make the best use of synergies,” says Wolfgang Eichinger, Manager of ALPINE’s Tyrol/Vorarlberg branch.

Project management
All of the available organic waste will be collected and stored during the initial working stage. ALPINE will complete the entire project as the sole contractor within a period of one year.

Environmental know-how
Drawing on extensive environmental know-how, Alpine has already executed a number of projects in the field of waste removal, recycling, site decontamination, landfill construction and the construction of sewage treatment plants in Austria and abroad.

International environmental projects
ALPINE will complete one of Europe’s biggest hydropower stations in Tsankov Kamak, Bulgaria in 2010. Hydropower plant projects are also in progress in Turkey and India. Last year ALPINE completed the sewage treatment plant in Sevlievo/Bulgaria and the remediation of the “Tuttendorfer Breite” contaminated site, winning international and national acclaim and demonstrating its professional know-how. The environmental project in Romania is another chapter in ALPINE’s story of success.

Extensive infrastructure measures are being implemented for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sotchi to be able to cope with the expected rush of visitors. The construction of the new railway line along the coast, where Tunnels 6 and 7 are being built, will play an important role.

Transjuzhstroy
Transjuzhstroy is one of the largest companies for the planning and construction of rail and roadways in southern Russia, but also engages in building construction and in the production and distribution of building materials. Its service portfolio embraces all the services required for turnkey projects. The group of companies has 20 affiliated companies and approx. 7,000 employees. Transjuzhstroy is the general contractor for all of Russian Railways’ infrastructure projects planned to be implemented in preparation of the 2014 Olympic Games.

ALPINE-RZDstroy
The ALPINE-RZDstroy joint venture was established 2009 in Austria between the two companies, JSC RZDstroy, a subsidiary of Russian Railways, and ALPINE Bau GmbH. The enterprise plans to mutually implement infrastructure projects in Russia, Austria and third countries.

All of the company’s administrative activities are consolidated in the new four-story building. The innovatively designed office not only offers employees a state-of-the-art workplace but also has a spacious interior design. Staff members can also use the garden. “The Steyr branch made good progress during the last few years and the construction of the new building a logical consequence, combining all office operations in one building,” says Karl Gruber, responsible managing director at ALPINE Bau GmbH. The building was designed by Hertl, a renowned team of architects from Steyr. “The practical, timeless design resembling a die offers a modern work environment for our staff as well as a private park for relaxation,” adds Ing. Josef Mayrhofer, Manager of ALPINE’s Upper Austrian branch, and Ing. Markus Mitterschiffthaler, Division Manager at ALPINE Hochbau Steyr, pleased with the new office building. ALPINE Upper Austria, currently employing a workforce of around 1150, is one of the big employer in this region.

The Mayor of Steyr, Gerald Hackl, bestowed accolades on the successful branch during the opening ceremony. Franz Schillhuber, Member of the State Government, and Mag. Johann Singer, Member of Parliament, praised the outstanding development of the construction business in the region. Nearly 200 visitors came to admire the modern office complex. A lively program by the entertainer and cabaret artist, Dr. Roman Szeliga, entitled “Humor in the Business” was offered in an extraordinary party location in front of the office building – in a tent shaped like a hemisphere with a height of ten meters. Multimedia effects also accompanied the exquisite Flying Dinner. The evening was hosted by the popular TV anchor, Miriam Hie, accompanied by the “Bodo and Band” jazz band.

“The geotechnical conditions and the diameter of the tunnel to be built make it necessary to use tunnel boring machines specially designed to meet these challenges,” explains Helmut Westermayr, Managing Director of ALPINE BeMo Tunnelling GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the ALPINE construction company specializing in tunnel construction. To fulfil this task, it was necessary to purchase the right equipment. The order for five new tunnel boring machines was placed with Herrenknecht AG and signed in Oberaudorf/Germany during a special celebration recently. The order value will not be announced but it can be said that it is one of the biggest delivery orders ever signed by ALPINE as well as Herrenknecht. Herrenknecht is one of the largest manufacturers of tunnel boring machines in the world. “The company is the perfect partner  for us. In addition to the superior quality of the machines, we were also convinced by the service package tailored to the needs of this project which includes a spare parts and service management,” adds Westermayr, who considerably upgraded his machine pool with the new TBMs and feels optimally equipped. 

ALPINE’s competence in tunnel construction
Its extensive competence in tunnel construction not only allows ALPINE to successfully conclude projects for the construction of railroad, subway and highway tunnels but also water and energy management systems on an international scale.

Among other projects, ALPINE is currently involved in the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland and responsible for building part of the new metro network in New Delhi as well as an intake tunnel for the power plant in Tapovan, India. It recently won the contract to build the Markovec Tunnel in Slovenia. Further tunnel construction projects for power plants are located in Bulgaria and Turkey. ALPINE has also been engaged in tunnel construction in China for years and is currently building a 25 km water supply tunnel. Consulting for tunnel construction projects is being provided in the USA, Russia, Kazakhstan and Great Britain, offering know-how and planning capacity.

Austrian pavilion
ALPINE Bau GmbH landed the contract to build the Austrian pavilion in 2009 and started construction in July 2009. The project was completed on schedule in March 2010. A shop, restaurant a spacious outdoor dining area were built on an area of approx. 2,112 m2. The contract was placed by the Austrian World Expo Office. The contract value for the two-story pavilion amounted to nearly EUR 5.5 million. The pavilion’s exceptionally attractive design was planned by the Vienna-based architecture firm, SPAN-Zeytinoglu Architects and Shanghai XianDai Architectural Design (Group) Co. Ltd.

The Austrian pavilion is located in Zone C, in road block C07 in the North Ring Road. ALPINE was in charge of the entire construction, interior design and installation of the multimedia system. The building will be removed again after the EXPO.

ALPINE in China
ALPINE has executed a number of successful projects in China over the years. ALPINE currently employs a staff of 500 from 7 nations. Its most successful projects include the Ningbo Expressway, the Yellow River Diversion Project Tunnel 1 North Main Line, the BASF-YPC/IPS Engineering/Maintenance Center, the Haefele Hardware Factory and ABB Turb DSystems Factory as well as the Degussa Technical Center and enlargement of the German School.

2010 EXPO Shanghai
The Shanghai World Exposition takes place from May 1 to October 31, 2010. The EXPO theme is: “Better City, Better Life.” It is the biggest exhibition ever held. A total of 70 million visitors and over 200 participating nations are expected. Since its foundation in 1851, the EXPO 2010 is the 93rd world exhibition in history.

Today the laying of the foundation took place in the presence of the Serbian infrastructure minister Milutin Mrkonjić, the Serbian president of parliament Slavica Dukic-Dejanović, the regional general manager of the World Bank Jane Armitage and Dietmar Aluta-Oltyan, chairman of the supervisory board of ALPINE Bau GmbH. “Winning this contract is impressive proof of ALPINE’s infrastructure competence,” says Aluta, pleased with the contract award in Serbia.
The main item is the 5.8-km bypass around the city of Dimitrovgrad and another 8.6 km section to the Bulgarian border. Both sections are part of the Pan-European corridor (Corridor 10). The client is a company specially formed by the Serbian government for this purpose; the funding will be provided by the World Bank.

Contract section 1 is for the construction of 15 kilometers of road and contract section 2 for the bridge construction: 7 bridges with lengths between 50 and 500 meters. The total contract value is approx. EUR 30 million. Construction is expected to take two years.

ALPINE wins in Serbia

“The construction division’s contracts with voestalpine Steel and other operations at this location will continue to be honored and are a key field of activity into which ALPINE Upper Austria can be optimally integrated,” adds Mayrhofer. Siemens VAI is happy to have found such a competent buyer in ALPINE Upper Austria. Werner Auer, chairman of the board, is certain that the 124 members of staff will have good perspectives, will be integrated smoothly and that “the competence of the construction division and continuation of the business are in good hands.”

ALPINE enhances its service portfolio
“ALPINE generated 80% of its construction output until now, allowing us to continue our stable growth and operate more flexibly,” says Karl Gruber, responsible managing director of ALPINE Bau GmbH. This acquisition will put us in a position to offer masonry, carpentry, locksmith, roofing, joinery, glaziery and plumbing services, increasing our autonomy.

ALPINE – strong potential for integration
ALPINE acquired a number of companies known for their competence on its course of success and incorporated them in the enterprise. When a company is acquired, great importance is attached to using the extensive know-how of its staff to ALPINE’s advantage. A strong identification with ALPINE is achieved through this integration policy, which also includes an intensive further education and training program. The high percentage of staff still working at ALPINE years after the merger is the best proof of this strategy. Key acquisitions include: Mayreder (1996), Ferro-Betonit (1998) and Universale (2001), Stump Spezialtiefbau GmbH (2005) and Beton- und Monierbau GmbH (2009), transferring over 1,000 employees to ALPINE. AST Linz with a staff of 25 was acquired by ALPINE’s Upper Austrian branch in 2008. The integration process went smoothly and the staff now identifies fully with the ALPINE company.

ALPINE acquires Siemens VAI’s construction division

“One of the country’s most modern bus stations will be built during this project. Winning this contract is impressive proof of ALPINE’s competence and competitiveness,” says Heli, pleased with the contract award. The construction project will symbolically bring the city’s old and new districts (Old Hatvan and New Hatvan) closer together. The bus station is scheduled for completion this September, eliminating the parking problems that have existed for years.

The central building will have a useful area of 615 m² on two levels. The bus arrival and departure areas are covered and in a monolithic reinforced concrete design. The bus station can accommodate a total of 18 buses simultaneously. Parking spaces for 15 buses and 24 cars will be provided to cope with the area’s parking problems. The bus station will be surrounded by approx. 5,500 square meters of green area.

Infrastructure competence
Infrastructures have always been one of ALPINE’s core competences. Focusing on the infrastructure sector allowed ALPINE to stay competitive, even during the economic crisis when industrial construction suffered a sharp decline. ALPINE landed several railroad contracts a few months ago for the modernization of railway lines in Bosnia and Republika Srpska, as well as a railroad contract in Slovakia for the rehabilitation of the double-track railway line between Trencianska Tepla and Belusa. ALPINE also won a 2-billion euro infrastructure project, the D1 franchised motorway in Slovakia, where construction has already begun.

ALPINE lands contract for bus station in Hatvan/Hungary

According to Dr. Peter Preindl, spokesman for the ALPINE management who handed over the check, “It is especially important for traumatized children to have the best care available at the Pöttsching Children’s Village.”

In Pöttsching, where children learn to come to terms with their traumas with a great deal of patience and a variety of therapeutic treatments, Angela Hartl, director of the Children’s Village, and Christine Tschürfz-Kny, manager of the “Licht ins Dunkel” fundraising project, were pleased with the generous donation. The McDonald’s in Mattersburg donated 70 Big Macs and Happy Meal coupons at the official donation ceremony.

“We would like to reaffirm the ALPINE Group’s ongoing commitment to support social projects through this sponsorship,” says Preindl.

The joint venture will be managed on equal terms, Alexey Konovalov (RZDstroy) and Andreas Schökel (ALPINE) appointed as managing directors. Oleg Toni, Vice President of the Russian Railway, Evgeny Dorot (RZDstroy) and ALPINE’s managing directors, Christian Trattner and Roman Esterbauer are the members of the supervisory board.

The joint venture will focus on mutual project work. Cooperation has already been agreed for the Alptransit Brenner A1 section in Tyrol (basic equipment) and the construction of two tunnels in Sotchi, Krasnodar Region, Russian Federation, to be built for the 2014 Olympic Games.

RZDstroy is a subsidiary of the Russian Railway. Its business activities focus on planning and implementing railroad projects in the Russian Federation. The company is also engaged in building construction so that the joint venture is not only limited to railroad projects. RZDstroy’s volume of sales was approx. 2 billion euros in 2008. It employs a staff of approx. 11,000.

ALPINE Bau GmbH has extensive experience in tunnel and railroad construction projects. With a construction output approaching 3.5 billion euros in 2008 and 15,530 employees, it is the second largest construction company in Austria.

ALPINE and RZDstroy form infrastructure joint venture

Future-oriented construction project
The city of Karlsruhe is carrying out a future-oriented project with its so-called “combined solution” for the City Railway tunnel. It will relieve the traffic in the inner city and improve the quality of life. The sophisticated project, costing a total of 588 million euros, will include the construction of two tunnels for the city railway over a distance of 3.4 kilometers with seven stations. The road tunnel for motor traffic is 1.4 kilometers long. The line for the new city railway above-ground will be 1.5 kilometers long with three stations.

Technically complex project
The services to be provided by the ALPINE consortium include the detailed design, sewer construction, installation of underground cables, foundation engineering as well as the construction of roads, tunnels and railway tracks. The specialists will also be responsible for the construction of the underground stations and tunnel ramps, which will pose a real challenge. “Apart from the actual construction work, extensive relocations and the removal of several kilometers of supply lines without disrupting the city railway service above ground make this such a high-end project in terms of logistics and engineering,” says Hell. ALPINE Bau Deutschland AG is a subsidiary of the Austrian ALPINE Bau GmbH, whose majority shareholder is the publicly-traded Spanish FCC S.A. company. The project is scheduled for completion in 2016.

 ALPINE lands big contract to build the Karlsruhe city railway tunnel

Governor Günther Platter and State Commissioner Patrizia Zoller-Frischauf presented the certificate for the “Award-winning apprentice employer in Tyrol” in the presence of Jürgen Bodenseer, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Erwin Zangerl, President of the Chamber of Labor. The showcase employer in Tyrol easily met the prerequisites for the nomination: several years of providing apprentice training programs, the corresponding equipment and organization as well as further education opportunities for apprentices and instructors. The apprentices have demonstrated their outstanding skills for many years in competitions and their final apprenticeship examinations.

ALPINE Bau Tyrol received the prestigious award for the 10th time. Together with the Chamber of Commerce and other construction companies, the company is also actively engaged in improving the image of construction careers in all of its facets. Visits to schools are organized to find formwork building and civil engineering apprentices, two trades that are still relatively unknown. Many students are unaware of the diversity and career opportunities available in construction as well as the extremely attractive compensation for apprentices in the construction trade.

Training offensive at ALPINE
The ALPINE Group is one of the largest training providers in Austria. Some 2 million euros were earmarked for a training offensive in 2010 alone. The project involves construction of 25 kilometres of motorway and 6 kilometres of access roads, of which 10.6 kilometres are tunnels and 7.6 kilometres bridges. Today’s ceremony marked the start of the contractually agreed “early works” which include planning, clearance works, access roads to bridges and tunnels, as well as tunnel portals. ALPINE Bau GmbH and HOCHTIEF Construction AG will each construct 50 percent of the project. Construction works are led by ALPINE.

Once the construction is completed, the project route will be operated for a period of 30 years by aoperating company in which HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions and ALPINE Bau/FCC Construcción both have a 50 percent shareholding.

HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions and ALPINE Bau are already successfully working together in Austria on the A5 (Ypsilon) PPP project which was opened for traffic last week.

D1 project
The 30 kilometre motorway project with 28 bridges will be built between the villages of Hričovské Podhradie and Dubná Skala. Total of three double-tube tunnels with a total length of over ten kilometers will be constructed using the “New Austrian Tunneling Method” (NATM).

This will open the S1East, S1West, S2 and the A5 towards the Czech Republic from Eibesbrunn to Schrick to traffic, completing the biggest construction site in Central Europe in just 37 months. The total contract value was EUR 933 million, nearly 800 million allocated to building costs alone. The entire project was privately financed. One third was financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB). The project will be refinanced by quality-dependent payments based on the freeway’s availability, by the shadow toll collected from freeway users and from ASFINAG’s direct construction payments, e.g. for the state or local roads that will pass directly into the ownership of the communities and states as soon as they are built.  

PPP Project
PPP stands for Public Private Partnership. ASFINAG awarded the franchise to Bonaventura, a private operator, who planned, financed and built the freeway and will now operate the road network. For the first time, an alternative mode of financing was chosen for a freeway. The “Y” section of road will be operated by the franchiser until 2039, when ASFINAG will acquire the title. “Completing this project in only 37 months impressively proved that even road infrastructure can be built on budget an in time,” says Dietmar Aluta-Oltyan, co-owner and president of the supervisory board at ALPINE Bau GmbH, satisfied with the project’s execution. 

The operation
Bonaventura Strassenerhaltungs-GmbH will maintain the entire “Y” road network until 2039. This will include maintenance of the structures, the operation of electrical and safety systems such as the control center, winter maintenance, highway maintenance, operation of traffic counting equipment and traffic control systems. The franchiser will also be responsible for the landscaping and maintaining the noise barriers.

ALPINE Consortium opens first private PPP freeway in Austria

ALPINE already demonstrated its competence in the construction of stadiums in Austria by building the Wörthersee and Tivoli stadiums and enlarging the Wals-Siezenheim stadium in Salzburg. The stadium in St. Pölten will have one of the biggest wooden roofs ever designed for a stadium in Europe. Its interesting architectural implementation uses a circular sun as a point of attraction and hallmark for football in St. Pölten while symbolizing a family-friendly, lasting design.

Stadium
The football stadium was designed by the architect, Dr. Stefan Nixdorf, partner of “agn Niederberghaus & Partner GmbH” architects. The wooden roof hovers over a circular landscape comprised of green mounds of earth surrounding the rectangular playing field. Visitors will already be captivated by the stadium’s creative and environmentally-friendly design at the entrance as they climb onto the surrounding embankment from where they have a look down into the bowl and the four stands. In addition to 8,000 seats the stadium will also have five VIP boxes and a business club for about 800 guests of honor. In designing the stadium, special attention was given to a high recreation quality for visitors. A fan shop and daytime café are to encourage people to visit the stadium even when there is no sportive program. The stadium is to become an integral part of the future St. Pölten Sports Park. In addition to an ice sports rink and the Lower Austrian State Sports School, the new stadium is planned to be the center and connecting link to the Ratzersdorfer See recreation center. “The stadium will primarily be made of wood, making the stadium in St. Pölten the most environmentally-friendly stadium in Austria,” explains Josef Rettenwander, the responsible project manager at ALPINE Bau.

Competence in stadium construction
ALPINE has extensive experience in executing large-scale stadium projects, gaining highest competence on a national and international scale in the construction of sports facilities. ALPINE landed contracts to build for the EURO 2012 stadiums in Danzig, Posen and the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland in 2009 alone. ALPINE also won the contract to build the stadium in Krakow. ALPINE earned extensive international acclaim in stadium construction upon building the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Dubai Cricket Stadium, part of the biggest sports center in the world.

ALPINE’s competence in tunnel construction

ALPINE wins contract to build the 2.1 km Markovec Tunnel (PDF)

Construction will begin in January 2010. The net contract value is EUR 130 million. The tunnel is expected to be completed in 2013. The twin-tube tunnel will be in full operation in 2015 after rehabilitation of the existing tube. Construction of the second tube of the Bosruck Tunnel will provide a two-lane connection between the states of Styria and Upper Austria. The 5.5-kilometer roadway (including galleries) will have a width of approx. 7.5 meters, and will be located to the west of the existing eastern tube.

“Construction of the western tube is a special challenge from a tunnel engineering point of view. We expect extreme water ingress during construction due to the snowmelt. At the same time we expect to encounter difficult geological conditions during excavation due to soaking, water-soluble material such as plaster, salt and clay,” adds Roman Esterbauer. 5 emergency bays and 11 cross-drifts, of which 6 will be walk-through, will ensure the tunnel meets the strictest safety requirements.

Construction Prize
The jury was impressed by the architectural and functional aspects of the Senior Citizens’ Home and Care Retirement Home project, combining existing and new structures. The design of sensitive façades and open spaces was an inventive way to blend the old with the new. The architects paid special attention to the needs of residents with limited mobility.

Criteria for the 2009 Lower Austrian Construction Prize
Prizes were awarded for the quality of the technical services, the contemporary design, layout and implementation, the ecological and sustainable design and economic and consumption-oriented functionality. The construction prize is awarded for construction projects completed in Lower Austria during the last four years.

The Austrian ALPINE Group is very active in Lower Austria and with a staff of roughly 2,200 one of the state’s biggest employers.

The concrete project of 2009 competition:
folding footbridge and bicycle bridge
The Concrete Student Trophy was awarded for the fourth time this year, sponsored, among others, by the ALPINE construction group. Students faced the challenge of designing a folding pedestrian and bicycle bridge made of concrete across the Vienna River at the Urania. The bridge design had to take an outlet width of 60 meters and the corresponding bridge span as well as the requirements for listed landmarks into account. The design had to accommodate the daily shipping traffic by the Twin City Liner and a tack maneuver at the Vienna River confluence.

The architecture student, Bosko Marusic from Bosnia and the structural engineering student, Blaz Mulavec from Slovenia, both studying in Graz, were able to best meet all of the criteria and won first place at the Concrete Student Trophy. Their “Bridge” – called handshake over the Vienna River- not only scored in its interdisciplinary but also in its intercultural approach. “The two slightly oblique bridge components merge into a handshake that impart a feeling of security and freedom to the people crossing the bridge,” is how the winners describe their project. Three teams of students tied for second place with their projects “The Floating Bridge,” “Curved Connection” and “Vienna Promenade.” The participating teams were from Graz, Vienna and Innsbruck.

“The Concrete Student Trophy was very successful again this year and brought forth a number of young talents. ALPINE will sponsor the competition again next year,” adds Gruber.

“Winning the contract for this challenging railway project is also impressive proof of ALPINE’s superior competence. Construction will start this year. Completion of the project is planned in 2013,” says Dr. Peter Preindl, CEO of ALPINE Bau GmbH, pleased at winning the railway contract.

The project will involve the complete rehabilitation of a roughly 20-kilometer stretch of railway between Trencianska Tepla and Belusa. Track will be replaced and four railroad stations, connecting roads and infrastructure buildings renovated and modernized. The modernization process is to raise the standard to the level of the Trans-European railway network.

Joint venture incl. ALPINE lands contract for railway line in Slovakia (PDF)

Railway Line Sarajevo – Ploce
The area covered by the contract signed for the route Sarajevo – Ploce for the sections Konjic-Raska Goro and Raskas Gora Capaljina shows a length of 99 km. The net order values amounts to EUR 51.1 million. 45% of the financing comes from the ERBD and 55% of the financing comes from EIB funds. ALPINE will conduct the work in collaboration with the company Swietelsky. The work is planned to start on 23 November and, according to the terms of the contract, must be wholly completed with 730 calendar days. “The upgrading of this route is extremely challenging because it consists of a very large number of tunnels and bridges”, reports Roman Esterbauer, the managing director responsible for the ALPINE Bau GmbH. The modernisation of this section is of extreme significance to the population, as nearly 60 percent of the entire route cannot be reached by car.
Mustafa Mujezinovic, Bosnia Prime Minister, Nail Seckanovic, the Minister of Traffic and Communications and representatives of the railway company Dragan Calovic / Muriz Herenda / Ivan Knezovic and Narcis Dzumhur were present at the signing of the contract.

Railway Line Banja Luka – Doboj
Roman Esterbauer’s team was able to sign a contract for the modernisation of the railway line Banja Luka – Doboj for the section Kostajnica – Josavka as an additional order. The 65 km long route with a net order value of EUR 33.9 million and 45% of the financing will also come from the EBRD and 55% of the financing will come from EIB funds. ALPINE will also be working in collaboration with Swietelsky here and will commence work on 23 November 2009. The work will also be completed within 730 calendar days.

Milorad Dodik/ Prime Minister of Republika Srpska, Nedeljko Čubrilović / Minister of Traffic as well as Dragan Calovic and Ivan Knezovic from the railway company Petko Stanojević were present at the signing of the contract in Banja Luka.

ALPINE launches new home page

C 917 and C918 metro projects
Contract section C917 has a value of 320.7 million Singapore Dollars (appr. 154 million Euro), includes the construction of the King Albert Park and Sixth Avenue stations. The construction of the Tan Kah Kee station, included in the contract section C918 represents a value of 350.04 million Singapore Dollars (appr. 168 million Euro). This station can also be used for civil defense in case of emergency.

Construction stages for Downtown Line
The Downtown Line is divided into three stages, the first to be completed in 2013, the second in 2015 and the third in 2016. The Downtown Line Stage 2, including the so-called Bukit Timah Line, has a total length of 16.6 km and 12 stations, entirely built underground. “The new line will connect the northwestern section with the center of Singapore and reduce the heavy traffic in the city”, explains Erich Golger, ALPINE’s area manager for Asia, pleased with the steady expansion of the city’s metro network. The transport Metro network will grow to more than twice its size in the next 12 years and should reach a total length of 278 km by 2020.

ALPINE lands again metro contracts in Singapore

Tunnel construction
The 3.86-kilometer twin-tube tunnel project (2 x 1,540 m + 2 x 670 m) and a cut & cover tunnel (1.16 km) were driven with three tunnel boring machines (TBM). The tunneling conditions were very hard. “We worked under extremely difficult conditions at a depth of 35 – 45 meters,” says Roman Esterbauer, managing director of ALPINE Bau GmbH. New Delhi’s major traffic arteries are located directly above the construction site: the Minto Railroad Bridge, Connaught Square and Connaught Circle as well as two existing Metro lines, whose continuous operation could not be disrupted. The work was not only provided at a great depth but also with a longitudinal gradient of 2.85 % and a water pressure of 4.5 bar. “Thanks to our extensive experience we were able to cope with the difficult situation during the headwork and complete the tunneling in just 11 months,“ adds Erich Golger, ALPINE’s division manager for Asia. This contract section includes the construction of the TBM tunnels, a cut & cover tunnel (1,165 m) and two underground stations, the New Delhi Station and the Shivaji Stadium Station, with a length of 242 meters each, as well as the adjoining parking garages.

Airport Metro Express
The Airport Metro Express Line in New Delhi has a length of 23 kilometers and six stations, linking the Central Railway Station in New Delhi with the Indira Gandhi International Airport and the district of Dwarka. The line between the main station and airport is to be commissioned on time before the 2010 Commonwealth Games to provide a fast, convenient airport connection and reduce the daily traffic jams on the road.

Final breakthrough for Metro Tunnel project in Singapore (PDF)

ALPINE submitted its C852 and C855 projects two sections of the Metro expansion project in Singapore. Both projects won silver in 2008. Winners of the SHARP award must achieve: either no reportable accident at the workplace in 2008 or at least 1 million man-hours without a reportable accident, no accident that caused death or permanent disability, no absences from work due to serious injuries and an injury rate that is 25 % lower than the average industry rate.

This is impressive proof of the company’s high safety standards and the outstanding health management put in place by its management team.

In his keynote speech, Wolfgang Tiefensee, Minister of Transport, Construction and Urban Development, emphasized the importance of expanding the A4 motorway, not only to relieve the bottleneck on the route between Eisenach-Görlitz and Magdala-Jena/Göschwitz but also to improve the ecology in the sensitive Leutra Valley. The Jagdberg Tunnel is an important link in the highway expansion system. This was corroborated by Gerold Wucherpfennig, Thuringian Minister of Construction, Regional Development and Media and the tunnel patron, Brigitte Pelke, Vice President of the Thuringian State Parliament. The blessing was issued by Monsignore Dr. Karl Heinz Ducke and Reverend Martin Krautwurst. There was extensive partying with the miners after the breakthrough.

Tunnel safety
The Jagdberg Tunnel will have twin tubes with three lanes in each direction and 10 cross drifts. This will make it possible for rescue vehicles to access the tunnel quickly in case of emergencies. The length of the Jagdberg Tunnel makes it necessary to install an elaborate ventilation system to minimize pollution at the portals. In case of fire toxic fumes can be exhausted through two ventilation sections. Emergency phones and fire extinguishing equipment will be available every 140 meters. Permanent video surveillance will serve to improve tunnel safety.

Following Peter Gfrerer’s welcoming address, Dietmar Aluta-Oltyan, chairman of the supervisory board and co-owner of ALPINE Bau GmbH, highlighted the outstanding services provided by the ALPINE team in Bulgaria. 1200 out of the 1300 employees working on the power plant are from Bulgaria. “We intend to continue to invest our know-how in power plant construction with this highly trained and experienced team,” remarked Aluta-Oltyan, who is convinced his company has good chances of landing the next power plant projects.

Father Todor blessed the building structure following words of thanks for the outstanding collaboration by representatives of the client, NEK. Accompanied by radiant summer weather and culinary regional delicacies, the celebration lasted well into the night.

“We are very proud to have won this prestigious order. The futuristic architecture of the building is certain to draw international attention in the setting of the World Expo. This order has not only allowed ALPINE to put its high levels of competence and competitiveness to the test, but also to further expand our involvement in China, where we have operated with success for many years,” explains Dietmar Aluta-Oltyan, President of the Supervisory Board and co-owner of ALPINE Bau GmbH. The Austria Pavilion will be erected in Zone C, in road block C07, on the North Ring road. ALPINE is responsible for the overall construction, interior fittings and installation of the multimedia system. The building will be dismantled at the end of the Expo. The pavilion has a total area of around 2,112 m2.

ALPINE in China
The company has operated successfully in China for many years and currently employs around 500 workers from 7 countries. Amongst the company’s successful projects are the Ningbo Expressway, the Yellow River Diversion Project Tunnel 1 North Main Line, the BASF-YPC/IPS Engineering/Maintenance Centre, the Haefele Hardware Factory and ABB Turbo Systems Factory, as well as the Degussa Technical Centre and the extension of the German School.

EXPO Shanghai 2010
The World Expo in Shangai will take place from 1 May to 31 October 2010. The general theme of the Expo is: “Better City, Better Life”. This will be the largest exposition ever. Some 70 million visitors and more than 200 participating nations are expected to attend. Expo 2010 will be the 93rd world exposition since the event was first held in 1851.

The stadium
The existing stadium in the center of Krakow and Poland’s oldest sports club (est. 1906) will be completely converted and rebuilt. The stadium currently has 7,000 seats, of which 1,100 are covered. The tribunes date back to 1912 and were built on an earth wall. The new stadium will have 15,500 seats. The tribunes will be replaced by modern tiers in reinforced concrete, partially roofed over. The new façade will consist of light-colored tiles. The lovely historic view of the Wawel Hill will not be obstructed. The stadium will also feature an integrated office and shopping center. Estudio Lamela, domiciled in Spain with a branch in Poland, designed the plans for the stadium. The stadium will be playable in October 2010. The office and shopping center should be completed by the end of November 2011. Approximately 15,000 m3 concrete and 1,700 tons of steel will be required. The lighting is to be mounted on the roof at a height of 10-19 meters and will meet state-of-the-art requirements.
Since the stadium will also be used for the 2012 European Championship, construction will fulfill all UEFA standards and requirements for a class III stadium.
In addition to football, the stadium will also be an ideal venue for other events, e.g. concerts, since part of the west tribune can be removed and converted to a large stage.

Competence in stadium construction
ALPINE has extensive experience in executing large-scale stadium projects, gaining highest competence on an international scale in the construction of sports facilities.
Following the construction of the Allianz Arena in Munich, ALPINE recently completed the Dubai Cricket Stadium in the world’s biggest sports center. ALPINE is responsible for the construction of the Wörthersee Stadium, the Tivoli Stadium and the enlargement of the Salzburg stadium in Wals-Siezenheim for the EURO 2008. ALPINE landed the contract to build the stadiums in Danzig, Posen and the National Stadium in Warsaw a few weeks ago.

The stone quarries
The limestone and igneous stone quarries at Velicanka and Vetovo were acquired at an auction of Kamen-Ingrad, which had gone into liquidation. The total package also included a dry mixing plant. The headquarters are located in Velika in eastern Croatia. The stone quarries will be incorporated into a new company to be called “Velicki kamen d.o.o.”. The quarries at Vetovo and Velicanka have reserves of around 6.3 million m3 and 11 million m3 respectively.

As a raw material, stone is set to become a vitally important requirement for the development of the railway network in Croatia in the coming years. ALPINE estimates that around 30% of the raw material can be supplied by Osijek-Koteks. The purchase also comes with 300 employees, most of whom work in the stone quarries, with a smaller number also working in the construction business.

Gains in the market share in every country
Construction output in the CEE countries increased by 49 %. The 21 % increase in the domestic markets traditionally worked by ALPINE such as Austria, Germany and Switzerland was even more impressive. “We reinforced our strong market position even further,” explains Aluta-Oltyan, who did not expect a 400 million-euro increase in performance in both the CEE and domestic markets.

Competitiveness
The ALPINE Group benefited from its high real net output ratio. “We only outsource about 20 % to subcontractors, i.e. 80 % of the construction output is provided by our own staff and with our own equipment. That gives us much more independence and allows for stable growth,” Aluta-Oltyan is convinced.

The future of construction industry
Difficult times are coming for the construction industry as a whole according to Aluta-Oltyan. Only well-positioned companies will be able to stand their ground. ALPINE is very active in the infrastructure sector, which should work to it advantage in the future. “This sector will be less strongly affected by the crisis,” says Aluta-Oltyan, who anticipates a much stronger slump in housing-, building- and industrial construction. The government has grasped how serious the situation is, according to Aluta-Oltyan. Now it remains to be seen how quickly steps can be taken to boost the economic situation and reopen the clogged financial channels. “A future-oriented approach also involves tackling projects with long lead times, such as power plant construction. The lack of energy will not decline in the future just because there is a crisis today,” adds Aluta-Oltyan. Due to the enormous demand for infrastructure projects, the situation in the CEE countries should improve as soon as the financial community – currently insecure and therefore restrictive – is prepared to provide capital for large projects under reasonable terms and conditions.

ALPINE in 2009
2009 will be a year of consolidation to strengthen the profit situation. With a volume of orders exceeding 3 billion euros at the end of 2008 ALPINE expects to be able to master this difficult year. The business segment of ALPINE Engery construction and the company owned material production will be extended. “To improve our company Know How we put great effort in enhancing the qualifications and education of our staff. ALPINE and FCC
The integration of the ALPINE Group in the FCC Group is on the right track. FCC fully supports the Austrian construction group, proven by the fact that FCC carried out a capital increase in the amount of 65 million euros for the ALPINE Group in 2008. This strengthened the equity capital base and significantly improved the group’s liquidity.
