A harbour gate is ready for installation
02.10.2009
A harbour gate at the Viennese harbour is ready for installation
20 m Euro are being invested into flood control measurements to protect the harbour Freudenau from future floods. The harbour is even protected from a flood of the century across one million square metres (about 20 soccer fields).

ALPINE and Grund-, Pfahl-, und Sonderbau implements two measurements. Additionally, the flood control dam is reinforced which separates the Danube channel from the inner harbour. A gigantic harbour gate is being installed at the harbour entrance. Like a sliding gate it can be closed in case of a flood.
The harbour gate has enormous dimensions. It is 30 metres long, 13.5 metres high, weighs (without mounting parts) about 203 tons and is made of pure steel. It is 2 metres wide to be able to resist the pressure from a flood.

VAM GmbH & Co KG Anlagentechnik und Montagen manufactured the harbour gate. The gate is composed of four individual parts with weights of 52.7 – 40.4 – 40.1 and 70.4 tons. After manufacturing in the factory in Wels they were treated with corrosion protection at the company Bauschutz Linz.
Then they were transported to the Viennese harbour by heavy-goods trucks. This is were they are currently stored.
The gate parts will be lifted in place from December 14 – 21, 2009.
