Competence in tunnel construction and an optimum cost structure have paid off. ASFINAG awarded the 123-million-euro contract to construct the second Pfänder Tunnel tube to ALPINE as the best and lowest bidder. Five groups of bidders vied for the contract worth millions of euros. Beton- und Monierbau GmbH was part of Alpine’s team of bidders. For the first time, bidders were able to choose from two tendered heading methods, the mechanical drive or conventional blast drive method.
Premiere for the expansion of Austrian motorways
The ALPINE team will drive the 6.5-km western tube with a tunnel boring machine (TBM). This mechanical driving method, used successfully, e.g. in Switzerland for several years, will be used for the first time to enlarge a road tunnel in Austria.
Tunnel competence
ALPINE is extremely successful in the underground construction of tunnels for roads and motorways, suburban railways and subways as well as high-speed railroad lines. Its current projects include the Lainz Tunnel, Katschberg Tunnel, Achrain Tunnel, Gotthard Base Tunnel, the Metro in Athens and in Singapore, etc.
