ALPINE and Bilfinger Berger remediate Tuttendorfer Breite
Contract value: approx. 21 million euros.

Vienna: The National Decontamination Agency commissioned the Tuttendorfer Breite Joint Venture, consisting of ALPINE Bau GmbH and Bilfinger Berger Bau GmbH, to remediate the Tuttendorfer Breite near Korneuburg. The remediation measures are designed to prevent the contaminants from spreading and to remove the used oil from the groundwater. The necessary construction work is already in progress and should be completed by mid-2009. The Tuttendorfer Breite Joint Venture was also commissioned to control the remediation measures for a period of ten years. The contract value is approx. 21 million euros.

A funnel and gate system will be used to remediate the “Tuttendorfer Breite” contaminated site. As a first step, the contaminated area will be enclosed by impermeable walls over a length of 1,200 meters to prevent environmentally hazardous emissions from escaping. In addition, a built-in active charcoal filter (aka gates) will remove dangerous substances from the groundwater seeping through the contaminated zone. Remediation wells are set up to extract the oil and collect the oil films from the groundwater.

Safety during floods
To adjust the groundwater level in case of a flood, the wall has gaps equipped with hydrovalves. Large shaft wells are also installed in the remediation zone. In the event of a flood, an artificial down gradient for the groundwater can be produced in selected wells in the contaminated zone after a certain pre-warning period. When the flood tide reaches the contaminated site with delay, the hydrovalves are opened and the water flows through the hydrovalves and filter elements over the artificial down gradient and into the contaminated site.

Tuttendorfer Breite contaminated site
A petroleum refinery was built on today’s contaminated site in 1927 and operated by various companies until it was closed down in 1961. Significant quantities of petroleum and petroleum products seeped into the ground during the time the refinery was in operation (1927 – 1960), particularly during the war.
